Looking Ahead to YALLfest

So, maybe you don’t know about YALLfest. It’s nothing to be ashamed about–I didn’t either, up until about this time two years ago. However, if you don’t know, this is the perfect time to look it up and then plan to go down to Charleston November 13-14.

If you haven’t guessed, that’s where Emily, myself and perhaps a few others plan to be that weekend. Why? Oh, only to meet our favourite authors, get our favourite books signed, and report back to you, dear readers, about everything you missed by not going to YALLfest. But, to convince you to go, we’re going to spend most of the rest of the time reminding you of all the reasons why we, personally, are looking forward to it.

Enjoy!

What I’m looking forward to: Basking in Libba Bray’s awesomeness

Why: Because Libba Bray is the coolest cat I know–and she’s even cooler in person. I was extremely excited to meet her and hear her band two years ago, and I’m even more excited (if that’s even possible) to get Lair of Dreams and the Gemma Doyle trilogy signed–and also to hear Tiger Beat again. Because YES, an AUTHOR BAND. WHAT COULD BE BETTER. (well, maybe a band band, but trust me that a band run by Libba Bray is pretty damn good).

What I’m looking forward to: An excuse to buy ALL of Marissa Meyer’s books

Why: Because I only have the first two, and those were airport buys (I buy a lot of my books in airports on long layovers). I read Cress via Kindle, but that’s not the same thing as having it in my hands, and I am incredibly excited to own Fairest and Winter. Oh, and get them all signed. I’m actually glad I didn’t just email Marissa Meyer and get bookplates, because now she gets to WRITE in all of my books, and make them even more wonderful.

What I’m looking forward to: Seeing Gail Carriger’s costumes

Why: Because Gail Carriger is as renowned as a cosplay enthusiast as an author. Also, I have read all of Soulless, as well as Prudence, and although I think her writing is a bit silly, I still love her books. I’m honestly torn as to which ones I should get–maybe the first book from each series, as a nice representative sample? And then, of course, I’ll have to get them all signed, because what else is YALLfest for?

What I’m looking forward to: Wondering whether or not Elizabeth Wein is going to draw little planes in my books

Why: Because she’s obsessed with planes? Although either way, I would love to have her handwriting in my copy of Code Name Verity, A) because it’s consistently in my must-bring-places pile (and considering I’m always moving, that’s something) and B) because who doesn’t love planes? and WWII? and spies?

What I’m looking forward to: Finally having my Veronica Roth books signed

Why: Because in honor of my very first YALLfest ever, Emily bought me the entire Divergent series–hardback, no less, and perfectly gorgeous. However, Veronica Roth was signing books only by special invitation, basically, and so those beautiful hardbacks remained unsigned. This year, however, will change that *rubs hands together*

What I’m looking forward to: Seeing if Marie Lu is as diabolical as she seems

Why: Because man, she seems utterly diabolical–the ending of Champion?!? Not that I mind a diabolical author at all, it’s a good profession to be diabolical in. I have yet to own actual paper copies of her books, so I’m going to get on that and then have her sign them all–and then maybe after I’ll debate whether I’ll accept an apology for that ending.

What I’m looking forward to: An opportunity to not embarrass myself in front of Leigh Bardugo

Why: Funny story–two years ago, Emily and I were the ABSOLUTE first in line for the Leigh Bardugo signing, and rather naturally, she asked if I had liked her books. Then I had to awkwardly explain that, despite asking her to sign them, I hadn’t read any of them yet. Hopefully this won’t happen with Six of Crows–I’ll speed-read it to make sure that doesn’t happen again!

What I’m looking forward to: Reading about the Black Widow

Why: Because she is my favorite Avenger, and also because Margaret Stohl is the new comic writer for her–and it promises to be AMAZING. Plus, basking in Margaret Stohl’s awesomeness will be almost as good as basking in Libba Bray’s. She seems like a wonderfully funny and diabolical author, which I can appreciate. Also, someone who promises to make me love Black Widow even more than I already do (which is a lot).

What I’m looking forward to: Rae Carson’s gold-covered new book (with some history in it)

Why: Because I loved her first series, and I have no doubt that a girl who can sense gold + California Gold Rush = amazingness. Hopefully there will be lots of sass and feminism, and a surprise ending just like the last series. Although if there isn’t, I trust this will still be a book I won’t regret buying! I mean, I AM the biggest historical fiction nut out there…

social media square no filter small upload sizeWhat I’m looking forward to: drawing a name out of a hat

Why: money willing, I want to expand my YA horizons a bit and get a book I haven’t even looked at before off of the author list. Emily has recommended a few, so I might choose between them. If anyone else has recommendations, feel free to share them with me. Or, who knows, I might get a few surprises and have fun with it!
