Between Frost and Fury (The Xenith Trilogy #2)

By: Chani Lynn Feener

Publisher: Swoon Reads

Publication Date: July 24th, 2018

Delaney has been kidnapped by aliens. Again. After only a month back on Earth with her hotnew alien boyfriend Ruckus, the deadly and devastatingly handsome prince Trystan has dragged her right back to his planet.

While some girls may dream of winning a prince’s heart, Delaney just wishes this one would leave her alone. Instead, she finds herself at the center of both a tense political battle between two alien kingdoms and Trystan’s romantic attentions, both of which are absolutely ruining the life she’s built on Earth. Not to mention the fact that she’s about to be crowned queen of a planet she’s barely even visited. Just another day in life of an ordinary human girl.

This book went through a lot of changes throughout the editing process. Each draft seemed so different from the first, and I believe there were about three in total. It’s always a lot of fun to step back at the end and compare the first and final drafts and see all the various changes and things that got added or taken away. For Between Frost and Fury, most of the things that got removed had to do with the characters, though there were a few scenes that either got removed or added as well. In the first draft, there was a scene with alien monsters that resembled crocodiles. If you read Amid Stars and Darkness (I hope you have!) you might recall towards the end of the book, Delaney playing a card game with Pettus and Gibus. There’s a creature on one of those cards that I included in book two. Unfortunately, the scene didn’t really fit and was a bit too elaborate so it had to be removed and altered. Oh well. The setting here actually changed a few times. First it was the room with the monsters, then it was Delaney’s room, then Trystan’s room. Another thing that changed was, in the first book there weren’t many scenes with either Gibus or Sanzie. In the second draft, extra scenes with both were added, but in the final draft most of them were removed or broken down because it was just too much. Sometimes it’s hard to find that balance when you’ve got more than two or three well known characters to juggle. This next one is technically from the very end of book one, but since it basically set the scene for this entire book I think it’s fair to include it here. In my original draft of Amid Stars and Darkness, at the very end when Ruckus is on the phone with Delaney, instead of telling her about Brightan, he says the same thing but about Trystan and the Tars. In the end, I changed it to Brightan, which made a huge difference in plot when it came time to sit down and write book two.
