The Last Magician

By: Lisa Maxwell

Publisher: Simon Pulse

Publication Date: July 18th, 2017

Stop the Magician. Steal the book. Save the future.

In modern-day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.

Esta is a talented thief, and she’s been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta’s training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.

But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.

1) Share an event from your past that you would change or avoid and why.

Hmmm… Perhaps I should say that I would have paid better attention that day when I injured my ankle. I was being careless, tired and bored from the monotony of the work, and I wasn’t watching where I was going. My life changed after that. I couldn’t work because of my injury, and so I decided to leave. My parents had enough mouths to feed without me adding to their burdens. Perhaps I would change that, but probably not. Everything that happened because of that moment made me who I am, and I’m a far stronger man now than I would have been if I’d followed the path of my life before that day.

2) What is your fatal flaw?

A fatal flaw? I’ve got plenty of flaws, but I’m too damn careful and suspicious of everyone to have a fatal one.

3) What is your biggest fear and why?

Losing all that I’ve built. Too many people depend on me now to let them down.

4) What motivates you?

My own bull-headed stubbornness. I’m as good a man as any from uptown, as good a man as any with two good legs, and as good as any Sundren. I won’t accept a life where the world sees me as anything less.

5) Which of the Order’s artifacts is the most important to you and why?

I want the Book. With the Book, we can destroy the Order and reclaim magic. With the Book, I can make the Order pay for what they’ve done.

1) Share an event from your past that you would change or avoid and why.

There was a day in the park, when I was just a kid. I wanted to show Dakari what I could do. And, let’s be honest, I wanted to fat wallet the sunburnt tourist with the noisy kids had been waving around in front of the hotdog vendor a few minutes before. But I was just a kid, and even though I was good, I wasn’t that good. Dakari paid for my stupidity that day, and as much as I don’t carry many regrets, he didn’t deserve it.

2) What is your fatal flaw?

Well, the Professor would say I’m too impulsive. He’s probably right. He’s usually right about most things.

3) What is your biggest fear and why?

Disappointing the Professor and letting down my team. They’re like family…my only family, really. I just want to make them proud. I’m not sure where I’d go or who I’d be if I wasn’t a part of the Professor’s team.

4) What motivates you?

Ha. I guess I already answered that one. I want to be worthy of my team’s trust. I want the Professor to smile at me like he’s proud of me. I know, that’s probably stupid, but he’s given me so much. He’s given me my whole life and made me who I am.

5) Which of the Order’s artifacts is the most important to you and why?

Ishtar’s Key. I know the Professor wants the Book, but the Key is the one that helps me slip through time. I don’t know who I’d be if I couldn’t do that.

1) Share an event from your past that you would change or avoid and why.

An event from my past? *smiles*  I couldn’t begin to say what I’d change. I’ve had quite a life, and besides…a good magician never gives away his secrets.

2) What is your fatal flaw?

You mean besides my good looks? *winks*

3) What is your biggest fear and why?

An empty house? *shrugs* I tempt death every night, so I don’t fear all that much.

4) What motivates you?

Freedom. I want out of this rattrap of a city. I want to see the countryside, breathe in clean air and look up at blue skies. I want to be free…. *blinks* Um… I mean…That and fame, of course…

5) Which of the Order’s artifacts is the most important to you and why?

I want the Book. If Dolph thinks it can get us out of the city, I’m going to make sure that I get it first.
