Publisher: Inkyard Press
Publication Date: April 30th, 2019
Indulge your vices in the City of Sin, where a sinister street war is brewing and fame is the deadliest killer of them all…
On the quest to find her missing mother, prim and proper Enne Salta became reluctant allies with Levi Glaisyer, the city’s most famous con man. Saving his life in the Shadow Game forced Enne to assume the identity of Seance, a mysterious underworld figure. Now, with the Chancellor of the Republic dead and bounties on both their heads, she and Levi must play a dangerous game of crime and politics…with the very fate of New Reynes at stake.
Thirsting for his freedom and the chance to build an empire, Levi enters an unlikely partnership with Vianca Augustine’s estranged son. Meanwhile, Enne remains trapped by the mafia donna’s binding oath, playing the roles of both darling lady and cunning street lord, unsure which side of herself reflects the truth.
As Enne and Levi walk a path of unimaginable wealth and opportunity, new relationships and deadly secrets could quickly lead them into ruin. And when unforeseen players enter the game, they must each make an impossible choice: To sacrifice everything they’ve earned in order to survive…
Meet the Characters
The cast of KING OF FOOLS is, well, quite large. I’ll try to narrow it to the top 10 (Ah! I somehow am still missing notable characters…)
Enne Salta: Finishing school dropout turned reluctant street lord, Enne Salta has gone on a wild and heart-breaking journey in ACE OF SHADES. After losing everything and still unable to return home, Enne must embark on a path of self-discovery. What does she have left to want? How far from her old self is she willing to stray in order to survive?
Levi Glaisyer: Levi varies somewhere between Chaotic Good and Chaotic Neutral, despite his absurd aspirations to become a street lord, who aren’t exactly known for their moral compasses. Levi’s dreams begin to reach fruition in KING OF FOOLS–but for a terrible price–and Levi must determine if his desires are worth it.
Jac Mardlin: Everything about Jac Mardlin’s beginning is a sad story. As an orphan, he was shipped to New Reynes to work for a One-Way House, or workhouses disguised as schools. He survived a terrible drug addiction. And he’s forever felt like little more than Levi Glaisyer’s best friend, the periphery character in someone else’s legend. Jac is the new addition to the narrators of KING OF FOOLS, and he is assigned a task of the utmost importance to the other characters and to the whole city. Unfortunately, Jac is also the worst man for the job. Jac has to make a choice for himself: continue his sad story, or finally write a legend of his own.
Lola Sanguick: Once forced against her will to become Enne’s second, Lola is now deeply loyal to Enne, and she puts her bookishness to the test in helping Enne build her own gang into a formidable force. But despite being at the center of the KING OF FOOLS story, Lola has never felt like one of the city’s main players. She is the spectator, the one who tells the story once it has finally ended… if she manages to survive that long.
Vianca Augustine: The ruthless mafia donna is back at it trying to make political waves. But the upcoming election has just gotten more personal for her: her estranged son is the candidate running against her own party. With the rumors about their relationship thrust into public spotlight, Vianca is forced into the awkward position of being cast as a broken woman… when she’d much rather play the monster.
Harrison Augustine: Finally returning to New Reynes after eighteen years, Harrison Augustine is running for public office in the closest election in history. Though he claims to be determined to take revenge on his mother, like her, his motives are far from clean. And is it even possible to trust an Augustine?
Grace Watson: A true new addition to the cast, Grace has been working for the Orphan Guild as a temp-for-hire assassin… until Enne shows up and offers Grace a job as an accountant in the largest illegal financial operation in the City of Sin. Grace reluctantly accepts and becomes the terrifying, goth heart of the book’s infamous girl gang.
Tock Ridley: With Chez Phillips gone and Jac off on his assignment, Levi needs someone to help him rebuild the Irons. Tock is lazy, dangerous, and more sarcasm than girl, but her heart of gold is worth more than anything the Irons could gamble for.
Narinder Basra: The owner of New Reynes’s most famous nightclub, accomplished musician, notorious heartbreaker… back for an unexpected larger role in Book 2.
Bryce Balfour: Otherwise known as “The Guildmaster,” or the leader of the Orphan Guild, a criminal temp agency. Bryce is a tortured romantic with dangerous secrets.
