Synopsis:

Sixteen-year-old Allie isn’t like other girls. Instead of spending her summer break sitting around on the beach, she takes the epic vacation of a lifetime.

Tornado chasing.

And she’s not disappointed. Just a few miles from the town of Evansburg, Nebraska, Allie meets her dream of seeing a tornado. In person. She can’t wait to tell her friends back home. Never mind that her parents are going to kill her.

But her dream soon turns into a nightmare, and a strange event leaves her shocked. Confused. When she returns home to Wisconsin, something’s…different. Allie now bears a curse so awful, it could destroy everyone and everything she’s ever known.

With her best friend, Tommy, Allie must return to the plains to find a way to reverse it. She enters a world that she had never imagined, where she becomes a pawn in a fight to save the people of Evansburg from her fate…or to destroy them.

Review:

The first thing I would say about this book is that it is unique. I appreciated that it was not a book about giving a chick unusual superpowers and her mastering them. It effectively avoided the cheesy factor. Allie is not so very blessed with the newly given ability to turn into a cyclone whenever a storm arises. She can not do this at will, nor can she control it at any point during the book. She is upset, rightly so, that this new ability has been forced upon her and she tries to take control of her new situation throughout the book. This was amazingly refreshing. Allie does not accept that she is the way she is now, she has faith there is a cure and goes to look for it. She also has a coherent sense of anger over her situations which is quite relatable to as, even though her situation is unique, her helplessness over not being in control of her own fate is understandable.

I thought that the characters were well developed, though I never quite understood why Madeline had to have her showdown where she did. If she was so worried about saving people as she claimed she was, why didn’t she find herself the remotest location possible? Why is she painted as a good guy doing the best in a bad situation when in reality she was still stripping people of their free will in an attempt to satiated a power she could barely control? Also, where did Uncle Cassius get off being so high and mighty and then being all disappointed in Allie when she inevitably took matters in to her own hands when he failed to share any information of any importance with her? I get that in the end it was to paint him in a less reliable light, but I felt that Allie should have caught on to his wishy-washy-ness earlier.

As for the inevitable teenage love story, it was cute. There was no head over heels falling in love, instead, there was the gradual realization of long deep seated feelings. The romance was sweet and didn’t overshadow the plot. However, I feel that there may be a love triangle in the next book given the note on which this one ended.

Twisted was a quick, fun read. I very much want to read the sequel to see where all the storylines go and how they develop and also to see how Hook herself develops as a writer. In addition, I am looking forward to seeing how all the relationships, from the parent-child, to the romantic, to the friendships, evolve with the series.
