synopsis

Sixteen-year-old Sam Drake thought she’d left the horrors of spring break and Defiance Castle behind her. But back home, the spirits swirling around her are more demanding, more aggressive.

Fear of being institutionalized by her skeptical mother drives Sam to follow her dad to New Orleans. There she hopes to take back control of her life. But the French Quarter and the cities of the dead have other plans. Hour by hour they drain her, making it next to impossible to fight off a ghost who is determined to use her for its own revenge.

Ensnared in an ancient power struggle where Voodoo rituals, betrayal, and murder rule, Sam must determine who to trust. One step in the wrong direction will lock her inside the Seam to walk among the dead for eternity.

After finishing The Shattered Seam, I was very much looking forward to Silencing the Seam and I waited, quite impatiently, for the email with the review copy attached. I was beyond delighted when it arrived. Following the fallout that took place at the mansion of famed serial killer Stephen Novak, Sam has more or less accepted her abilities as a medium, her Uncle Eric is nursing his guilt over what happened in by doing research in New Orleans, and there may just be something more to Sam’s relationship with Kyle.

As her life at home as she knows it falls apart, Sam and her father travel to New Orleans and meet up with Eric, and it just so happens that things in the spirit world don’t stay quiet for long. New Orleans is Novak’s old tramping ground, and this, along with a host of many other spirits, add to the creepy and surreal  surroundings that Kathleen has built for her characters and crafted out of the already rich atmosphere of New Orleans.

Not only are Eric and Sam back in this installment, but Kyle makes a sudden appearance, as well. There is also the wonderful Eddie, I loved what she added to the story and her relationship with Sam. Again, Kathleen refuses to pull any punches with her characters. She puts them through the wringer, every one of them, and pushes them to their mental, and sometimes literal, edge. None of the characters leave this book undamaged and I appreciate that Kathleen trusts her characters enough to grow and evolve from their experiences that she doesn’t back off. No one is safe, and these characters are put to the the test to conquer their demons.

Once again, I’m left wanting more. I need to know what the book’s conclusion means for Sam, I want to know what Eddie needs to share, and I have to find out how Kyle recovers from all he went through in this book. Here’s hoping the third book isn’t too far away.
