Air and Ash (Tides Book 1)
By: Alex Lidell
Publisher: Danger Bearing Press
Publication Date: May 2nd, 2017
Master and Commander meets Tamora Pierce in a seafaring adventure of duty, love, magic, and a princess’s quest to protect her kingdom on her own terms.
After a lifetime of training, seventeen-year-old Princess Nile Greysik, a lieutenant on the prestigious Ashing navy flagship, sails into battle with one vital mission–and fails.
Barred from the sea and facing a political marriage, Nile masquerades as a common sailor on the first ship she can find. With a cowardly captain, incompetent crew, and a cruel, too-handsome first officer intent on making her life a living hell, Nile must hide her identity while trying to turn the sorry frigate battle worthy. Worse, a terrifying and forbidden magic now tingles in Nile’s blood. If anyone catches wind of who Nile is or what she can do, her life is over.
But when disaster threatens the ship, Nile may have no choice but to unleash the truth that will curse her future.
AIR AND ASH is the thrilling first installment of the TIDES series. Recommended for fans of Sarah J. Maas, Tamora Pierce, and Naomi Novik.

So. Freaking. Good.
A heroine who is clever, badass, and driven. An original, creative, well crafted magic system. Seafaring ladies (and gents) who own the high seas. Sign me up.
After failing to succeed on a divisive mission that could prevent a war, Nile Greysik, princess of Ashing, is now having to consider an arranged marriage to strengthen her country’s political ties. However, her talents are quite wasted on a political marriage and she flees. Not only to escape from her alternate fate, but also to discover a cure for her sick twin who is tormented by elemental magic. She has yet to consider, though, that the politics on the ship she sneaks on are just a volatile and dangerous as the ones she is trying to escape.
Fierce and pragmatic, Nile is a great character. She may be a little naive, but not stupidly so, and her competence in certain areas mixed believably with her doubts and mistakes in others. Her love interest, Domenic, grew on me. He was a little rough around the edges, but you’ll love him in the end. The rest of the cast fell into their respective roles easily, and played them well. Rima as Captain wasn’t unbelievably incapable, and Catsper with capture your attention and heart as well.
Air and Ash was fantastic and will have you hooked from the first chapter. I can’t tell you how happy I am that the second book is coming out this year (next month even!), because that cliff hanger is a doozy and will leave you desperate for more.
