Over Raging Tides (Lady Pirates #1)

By: Jennifer Ellision

Publisher: Independent

Publication Date: March 20th, 2018

The pirate crew of the Lady Luck lives by many rules, but chief among them is this: they do not allow men on board.

That’s a rule that quartermaster Grace Porter is willing to break when a shipwrecked young nobleman offers her information of an omniscient map, stolen from his warship by an enemy vessel. Until now, the map was only the stuff of legend… but with its help, Grace may finally be able to hunt down the Mordgris, the sea monsters who stole her mother away from her.

Unfortunately, some members of her crew have other plans…

To find the map and face the Mordgris, Grace will have to confront her past, put the Luck between warring nations, and uncover treachery aboard the ship. And ultimately, her revenge and the destruction of the Mordgris will come at a hefty price: the betrayal of her crew.

Grace promised them they wouldn’t regret this.

She just isn’t sure that she won’t.

Thanks for having me today! I’m excited to introduce you to some of the crew of the Lady Luck, the all-female pirate ship at the center of Over Raging Tides.

Grace Porter is nineteen and the main character of Over Raging Tides. On board the Lady Luck, she holds the position of both the quartermaster and first mate. Having been on board the ship since a young age, when her mother and Captain Ilene fell in love, she takes her duties seriously. Though she’s yet to best Captain Ilene in a duel, Grace favors combat with a sword. But she isn’t a bad shot either. Most of Grace’s motivations these days lie in refusing to believe her mother is truly lost to her, and bringing vengeance upon the creatures who stole her away.

“Women are terrible luck. At least, for anyone who crosses us.”

Captain Ilene the Lady Luck’s captain and her relationship to Grace is probably best described as a stepmother—not a wicked one. Ilene’s search in her youth for the Map of Omna led to her meeting Grace’s mother. They (and Grace) ran away together and while Ilene kept up with her piracy, she left chasing mythical maps behind. But now that Grace’s mother is gone and the map has resurfaced… well, that changes everything. Ilene is clever, good with a sword, and a strong leader who doesn’t miss a trick.

“Very sly. A fox in a proverbial henhouse—though perhaps that is a bit on-the-nose. But let’s continue on with this metaphor, regardless. Foxes are a nuisance. And when a farmer grows tired of a pest disrupting the hen’s business, what do you supposed that farmer may do?

“The farmer may choose to exterminate that pest.”

Sam Smi is 21 and Grace’s closest friend. She most often serves at the Lady Luck’s look-out. Sam is quiet and keeps to herself a great deal, but she is fiercely loyal to Grace. Even if she dreams one day of leaving life on the Luck behind to captain her own ship.

“You didn’t think you were going to get rid of me that easily, did you?”

Celia Munn is in her late thirties. Celia was once the Lady Luck’s quartermaster and first mate, but more recently, the crew has elected Grace into the position instead. Celia is a ruthless—but exemplary—pirate and is the de facto leader among her pack of crew members. Other than her thirst for treasure, she keeps her motives to herself.

And Grace doesn’t trust her as far as she can throw her.

“It’s always best to put a dumb animal out of its misery.”

Jennifer Ellision spent a great deal of her childhood staying up past her bedtime with a book and a flashlight. When she couldn’t find the stories she wanted to read, she started writing them. She loves words, has a soft spot for fanfiction, and is a master of the fangirl flail. She resides in South Florida with her family, where she lives in fear of temperatures below 60 Fahrenheit.
